Your Kinze Winter Maintenance Tips

Park it right. Plant it right.

Your Kinze winter maintenance tips.

A little care now means one less thing to worry about when spring arrives. Get your Kinze planter ready for Planting Season 2027 in three simple steps: Clean It. Protect It. Inspect It.

Proper winter storage and preventive maintenance do more than keep your equipment in good condition. They help protect planting accuracy, reduce the risk of unexpected downtime and ensure your planter is ready when the next planting window opens. The good news? Getting ahead of spring doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s where to start.

1. CLEAN IT. A fresh start begins with a clean planter.

A thorough cleaning is the first step towards proper winter storage. Remove accumulated dirt and crop residue to prevent moisture build-up and help protect your Kinze planter from corrosion during the off-season.

Your cleaning checklist:

  • Remove accumulated dirt and crop residue, paying particular attention to sprockets, shafts and areas where debris can collect and retain moisture.
  • Empty and clean seed, fertilizer and granular chemical hoppers.
  • Clean drive chains and apply a suitable rust preventative or remove and store them in oil as directed in your Operator’s Manual.
  • Flush liquid fertilizer tanks, hoses and pumps with clean water, then drain the system according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If equipped with Bulk Fill, clean the hopper, entrainment assembly and seed delivery system.
  • Whenever possible, store your planter in a dry, sheltered location.

One important precaution: Avoid directing high-pressure water at electrical components, bearings and seed meters. Excessive water pressure can damage sensitive components or force moisture into areas where it doesn’t belong. The goal is simple: park it clean, not with an entire season still attached.

2. PROTECT IT. Take care of what makes it plant.

A clean planter is a good start. But the components responsible for accurate seed placement deserve attention, too.

Follow your Kinze planter’s recommended lubrication and maintenance schedule, including:

  • Lubrication: Lubricate the planter and row units at all specified lubrication points.
  • Seed meters and discs: Remove and clean seed meters and seed discs. Store meters in a dry, rodent-free environment, with seed discs removed and stored vertically, as specified in your Operator’s Manual.
  • Vacuum system: Where applicable, disconnect the vacuum hoses from the seed meters and run the vacuum fan at full hydraulic flow for two minutes to remove accumulated dust and debris, following the relevant model-specific procedure.
  • U-joint slides: Clean and grease the sliding components to help prevent corrosion and ensure smooth operation.
  • Corrosion protection: Apply suitable rust protection to exposed metal surfaces, particularly disc openers, blades and row marker discs.

Remember, accurate planting depends on more than technology alone. Well-maintained mechanical components are just as important for consistent operation and accurate seed placement.

3. INSPECT IT. Spot it now and fix it before planting in spring.

Winter is a much better time to discover a worn component than the first good planting day of spring. With your Kinze planter clean and safely parked, use the off-season to carry out a thorough inspection.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Row units: Inspect disc openers, bearings and other soil-engaging components for wear or damage.
  • Seed meters and driveline: Check for worn or damaged components and signs of improper operation.
  • Gauge and closing wheels: Inspect wheel condition, wear and adjustment.
  • Fertilizer and no-till attachments: Examine working components, mounting points and connections.
  • Electrical systems: Check sensors, wiring harnesses, connectors and cables for visible damage or deterioration.
  • Frame and running gear: Inspect the frame, wheels, tires, hitch and row markers.
  • Seed delivery hoses: Look for wear, cuts, cracks or other damage that could affect seed delivery.

Found something that needs attention? Repair it or order replacement parts during the off-season, while there’s still time to prepare.

It’s also a good opportunity to have your seed meters professionally tested and calibrated, where applicable, to help maintain consistent metering performance and seed-spacing accuracy.

Your Kinze planter comes with its own maintenance roadmap

Not sure about a lubrication point, inspection requirement or service interval? Your Kinze Operator’s Manual is designed to make maintenance easier. The Lubrication & Maintenance section provides model-specific instructions, recommended procedures and service intervals to help you keep your planter in working condition. Because maintenance requirements can vary between planter models and configurations, always refer to the manual for your specific machine.
